Register .nz Domain Names

.NZ Domain Name Launch – 1PM, 30 September 2014! Major changes for .nz – here’s what you need to know:

The .nz domain name space is undergoing a momentous, once in a generation change. From 1pm, 30 September 2014 you will be able to register domain names directly before the .nz – e.g anyname.nz instead of anyname.co.nz. This means more choice in .nz domain names. You can now, for example get anyname.co.nz as well as anyname.nz (where the ‘.co’ portion of the domain name is missing).

Benefits of this change include:

  • More choice in .nz domain names.
  • More representative online addresses. For example, many people get co.nz domain names even though they are not businesses.
  • Shorter .nz domain names.
  • Aligning New Zealand with many other countries that have already made this change.

If you have any questions regarding the .NZ domains, or if you are an existing customer and wish to enquire about or register the .NZ version, feel free to give us a call on 0800 862 732. We can step you through the process.

What this means for you

If you already have a .*.nz domain name, you’re an existing registrant. It’s important to know that, depending on when you registered your name, you may be eligible to register or reserve the shorter version of your .nz domain name before it becomes available to anyone else. To find out if you’re eligible, you will need to check the status of your domain name at the Domain Name Commission’s web site at http://www.anyname.nz.

What does your status mean?

After checking your new .nz name above, you will be returned a status confirming eligibility for that name. This could be one of the following:

Will beAvailable
You can try register the shorter version of the name on a ‘first-come, first-served’ basis from 1pm, 30 September 2014 at our website.

Will be PRR Preferential Registration or Reservation
This means you have preferential registration or reservation for 6 months from 30th September 2014. You can register or reserve the shorter version of your name before anyone else provided that you are the owner of the related existing .nz domain name (for example you could register anyname.nz if you are the registrant of the name anyname.co.nz. You’ve got Preferential Registration or Reservation eligibility until 1pm 30 March 2015 and no one else can register this name during that time. You can place your preferential registration at our web site after 1pm 30 March 2014. If you would prefer to place a pre-registration before the 30th, you can do this by performing a “transfer”, using the UDAI for the domain name that holds the preferential rights to the shorter .nz name (the linked domain).

Will be Conflicted
Your name has been registered in at least two second levels. For example, Person A has example.co.nz and Person B has example.org.nz. To get the shorter version you’ll need to go through the ‘conflict’ process at anyname.nz from 1pm, 30 September 2014.

Will be Prohibited
No-one is able to register the shorter version of the name.
