How to Configure Port 587 on Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 (Smart Host) Print

  • 80

Smart Host is a type of mail relay server which allows an SMTP server to route e-mail to an intermediate mail server rather than directly to the recipient's server. With Create Hosting, Smart Host requires authentication from the sender to verify privileges to have mail forwarded through us. This is different from an open relay that will forward mail from the sender without authentication. Create Hosting uses SMTP-AUTH for all Smart Host connections.

The typical port used for SMTP on Microsoft Exchange server is port 25. However, for added security, port 587 is used as an alternative by Create Hosting for all SMTP-AUTH connections through our servers. The port can be changed in the Exchange server console:

Exchange 2003

2. Click your Exchange server name on the left side of the screen. In the options expanded below the server icon, click the one labeled "SMTP."
3. Right click the icon labeled "Default SMTP Virtual Server" in the center of the management window and select "Properties."

5. Enter "587" in the text box labeled "TCP Port." Press "OK" to save your settings. Press "OK" again at the main properties window to save the settings. The Exchange server is now configured to use port number 587.
