Troubleshooting "The message being sent exceeds the message size established for this user" - Error Number: 0x80040610 Print

Sometimes you may have somebody trying to send emails that contain large files (attachments) that are maybe 10MB - 20MB or larger. After they hit the submit button they get an error message similar to: "The message being sent exceeds the message size established for this user." In some cases, if you check the user's outbox the message will still be there.

This can occur with Exchange using Outlook, particularly if Outlook is setup in Exchange server cached mode. To solve this, ask the users' Exchange system administrator to check the global send size limits and compare those limits to the size of the outbound email attachment. If the email attachment exceeds the size limit, you could either request the limit to be raised, or you can ask the user to try zipping the file(s) to reduce the total size of the attachment(s). Then try re-sending the email.
