How to Enable SMTP Auth Using Outlook Express or Outlook 98 / Outlook 2000 for Windows Print

  • 5

This document explains how to enable universal email access using SMTP AUTH in Outlook Express or Outlook 98/2000 for Windows.

If you are traveling and using your computer, you may experience difficulty sending email using a connection service other than Create Hosting. For example, a hotel's Internet service or connecting at a Starbucks Coffee Company's wireless service. Some connection services also block the standard port for sending email, SMTP Port 25. Working around this issue requires changing the SMTP Port 25 to Port 587. Please note that once this change has been made you will NOT need to change it back. These settings will work accessing your email from anywhere.

Enabling Universal Email Access (SMTP AUTH)

  1. Open Outlook Express or Outlook 98/2000.
  2. From the Tools menu select Accounts. The Internet Accounts box appears.
  3. Select the Mail tab. Your email account appears, usually labeled something like mail.[yourdomain].co.nz.
  4. Click on the account mail.[yourdomain].co.nz, then click the Properties button on the right. The mail.[yourdomain].co.nz properties appear.
  5. Select the Servers tab.
  6. Under the Outgoing Mail Server section, check the box My server requires authentication and click the Settings.. button. The Outgoing Mail Server box appears.
  7. Click the circle-box Log on using and in the Account name box enter your email address, and then enter the password for this email account
  8. Check the box Remember password. Click OK.
  9. Select the Advanced tab.
  10. In the box marked Outgoing mail (SMTP) change the entry 25 to 587.
  11. Click OK to close the mail.[yourdomain].co.nz Properties box. Click the Close button to close the Internet Accounts box. SMTP Port 587 has now been enabled.
